Freestanding & Special Manikins
Why are our freestanding manikins different?
A standing figure sounds straightforward, but a traditional stunt dummy normally needs visible wires, supports or a base plate to remain upright. Those supports can restrict camera positions and create additional work during filming or post-production.
Our self-supporting Stunt Action Manikins can stand without visible wires or external plates. They are also fully articulated, allowing them to be placed in natural human poses rather than simply held in one rigid position like a traditionally used prop stunt dummy.
The joints can be locked to maintain a carefully arranged stance or left free-flowing when the manikin needs to move and react during controlled action. This gives productions greater freedom when planning standing body doubles, character replacements and unusual practical shots.
What do we mean by "Specials"?
“Specials” covers requirements that do not fit neatly within one of our standard manikin categories.
A production may need an unusual body position, character appearance, height, build, weight or combination of components. The manikin may have to fit within a confined set, wear specialist costume, interact with scenery or maintain a particular pose for an extended period.
Rather than assuming that an existing configuration will work, we assess these requirements individually. We can then advise whether one of our current manikins can be adapted or whether a more bespoke solution should be considered.

Our manikins do not use an internal steel-frame skeleton.
The exclusive modular body system has been developed by Stunt Action Manikins (S.A.M.) Ltd through more than 14 years of specialist production.
Preparation & Production Support
Once we understand the shot, we will select the most suitable manikin.
Preparation may include adjusting the height, proportions, weight, stance, joint positions, head angle and appearance.
Reference photographs, costume information and storyboards of the proposed action can help us prepare the right configuration.
Costume, Make-up & Effects
Our professional manikins can be supplied wig-ready and are compatible with alcohol-activated paints, theatrical blood and prosthetic wounds.
We liaise with the stunt, special effects, costume, hair and make-up departments, assist with dressing, positioning, handling and resetting of the manikin on set.
